It’s All Inside of You
Maybe today you need to hear this: There is only one place to find the answers you seek, and that is inside yourself.
“Almighty Gut feeling, how great Thou are! Too bad I so ignore Thee,
my destination star.” Liliana Kohann
As a spiritual guide and companion, my clients often bring big, weighty matters of discernment into our sessions - crumbling marriages, job upheavals, parenting challenges, career changes.
What is your deepest hope?
I don’t know what they should do. And if I do start to have an opinion about it, I acknowledge that to myself, then pray for help in letting it go.
What is your biggest worry?
The most common thing I hear from clients during a session is “That’s a great question!” Questions are the main way I guide people into their own answers.
A few times after a client responded to a question, I said “There’s your answer” and then they burst into tears. Sometimes it was with relief, and sometimes it was because they saw they could no longer avoid the hard stretch of road ahead on their path.
“There is the voice that doesn't use words. Listen.” Rumi
The other way I bring clients into themselves is by reflecting back what they say, either in the same words or in a way that highlights the main themes. Sometimes, they’ll say “yes, that’s it!” and I remind them I’m just repeating what they said. Then we laugh together!
“What do your dreams want you to know?”
Medial Women’s Circles are another setting in which I facilitate people into their own knowing. Each gathering centers on a theme with story sharing and asking each other reflective questions. The validation, kinship, and insights that come from this simple practice can be life-altering.
Whether or not you work with a spiritual companion or participate in a Circle, I encourage you to find a practice that brings you more fully into your own soul. Here’s the prayer I’ve come up with that helps me:
Angels, Ancestors, Spirit Guides of the most holy, wise and loving light,
help remove my barriers of ego, agenda, insecurities, distractions and judgment
so that I may be fully open to your love and to the wisdom within me.
