The Re*Vision Workshop:
Seeing self and story with new eyes
The word “revision” means “see again.” Even the act of brainstorming helps us re-see our subject matter, so revision begins long before we assume. Later we can step away from our drafts, change how we understand what we’ve written, and reenter the creative process with fresh perspective. Revision changes both text and writer. We are created as we create.
How can we keep our hearts open to radical re-seeing throughout the writing process? In this monthly drop-in workshop, we’ll engage in collective practices to keep us nimble, find new perspective, bring intention and efficiency to labor, and steer our creative energy toward what matters most—coming more alive, on the page and in our being.
Fridays at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis, 1:30-3:30: Jan 30, Feb 20, Mar 20, Apr 17,
May 22, Jun 19
Price: $35/single class; 3 options for series
Each month we will:
Write to revision prompts in response to our drafts.
Focus on a revision technique. Some areas we’ll explore are the power of questions, listening for a piece’s heartbeat, releasing attachments, stretching moments, deepening metaphors, exercising compassion in the writing, leveraging the reflective voice, and reframing our work.
Share excerpts of our writing in small groups.
Read and respond in depth to one participant’s work. We will revise the traditional writing workshop, which focuses on advising writers on the development of their pieces, to instead help readers of a work-in-progress strengthen their revision muscles.
This workshop is for writers of all experience levels. Participants are expected to write between classes and come prepared with a few pages of their work, no matter how rough. Everyone will have a chance to share excerpts in small groups but only the writing by regular attendees will be discussed in the longer workshop.
