Exhale

At my friend’s party, conversation turned to how stressed everyone feels by the chaotic state of the world. Beyond venting, this group moved into heartfelt grappling with how each wanted to meet the moment.

I was content to listen until our host asked for my response. While I don’t have all the answers, I do know my answer begins with one word:

E x h a l e.

A long exhale.

When the exhale is longer than the inhale, we activate the relaxation response in the body.

Why not try three long exhales right now before reading further?

It’s amazing how it can clear the head and quiet the body.

I followed up with some gentle brushing across each arm.

It was amazing how it changed the energy in the room.

The people who were starting to check out by sinking into the couch perked up. Others, who had started to become increasingly agitated, were visibly more relaxed.

We need each of us to be in a place of relaxed engagement because that is the source of our best ideas, our most transformative conversations, and our most healing moments.

In my new video Qigong Tapping for Balance you can participate in an expanded version of the breathing, tapping, and brushing I offered at this party.

Happy Autumnal Equinox – it’s a good day for balance!

Love,

Emily
